The Heiligenstein is the best known and most traditional single vineyard Riesling in the Kamptal, Niederösterreich  (Lower Austria). It was the first single vineyard of the region to be named and drawn on a map. It is classified by the “Traditionsweingüter Österreichs” (Traditional Wine Estates of Austria) as an “Erste Lage”, or Premier Cru.

In October, healthy, fully ripe grapes were harvested by hand, then placed in small boxes and carefully transported to the cellar, where they underwent maceration with their stems. After 18 hours, they were pressed and, following an additional 12 hours and some preclarification, the steel tank fermentation took place. At the beginning of March, the wine was racked into wooden barrels, and then finally bottled in September.

Tasting Notes

The wine is extremely fine, almost discreet, and very balanced because of the perfect ripeness of the grapes,” Fred Loimer says. “It has enormous minerality on the palate along with well-integrated acidity.” Its fine, almost silky character has an aristocratic-like expression. The concentration and tightly woven structure point toward a long life.  But this is no surprise, as the Heiligenstein is one of the longest living wines of the Kamptal. In its youth, it shows fruit and raciness. With age, it plays out its sophistication and reflects its origin in an incredibly youthful way. And with bottle maturation, it makes a perfect food partner.

Food Pairing

Pair with trout in a butter sauce with fresh crushed pepper, butternut squash lasagna with béchamel, or chicken pâté.
